We’ve been looking to introduce a graduate scheme here at Colewood for a while. We want to give graduates the opportunity to get ‘on the job’ experience within each of our marketing teams, learn more about working in specific channels and learn relevant skills within the workplace. Usually, when you graduate and start applying for a role, the company will need experience so you’re able to hit the ground running. This is a total catch 22, how can you gain the experience, if they already want you to have it? We wanted to give graduates the opportunity of training, the ability to try different specialisms over a 12 month period to see which areas of marketing they’re interested in and would like a career in. The scheme will lead to a full-time permanent role after 12 months, whilst still receiving a full-time salary throughout the scheme.
The 12 month schedule
The graduate scheme comprises a 12 month schedule, across each department of Colewood digital. The graduate will move around the departments every quarter.
This means that in Q1, they will work with the email marketing department where they will have an introduction to the service, being briefed on design, build, sending, reporting and strategy. Throughout their time with the Email marketing department, the graduate will gain experience and training on best practices, whilst learning about subject, timing and re-sending optimisations. By using Google Analytics to analyse performance or highlight issues with potential clients, the team will support the graduate in liaising with the clients and upcoming campaigns and strategies. At the end of Q1, the graduate would have gained a basic understanding of how emails are built, using different tools, and an overall basic knowledge of email marketing as a whole.
Q2 will see the graduate move over to the SEO department. Here they will have an introduction to all aspects of SEO, including strategy, content, technical, outreach and digital PR. Whilst being mentored by the SEO team, tasks will be assigned to and completed by the graduate, where they will receive continued support and training throughout. During their time working with the SEO department the graduate will become familiar with the latest SEO trends and best practices, gaining enough knowledge to be able to confidently liaise with clients regarding the work.
As we move onto Q3, the graduate moves across to the PPC department. Starting with an introduction to different PPC campaigns including search, shopping, video and display, the graduate will gain knowledge and experience working with a vast variety of clients from different industries. These include B2B and B2C. The graduate will be trained on how to identify trends in data to provide actionable insights, and successfully be able to keep up to date with the latest PPC industry trends. Throughout the graduates time on PPC, they will oversee accounts on both Google Adwords and Microsoft Bing, with continued support from the department.
Ending with Q4, the graduate will be introduced to the social media department. They will be introduced to organic, paid and influencer marketing, whilst gaining experience working on a range of B2B and B2C clients with varying requirements. This will broaden their knowledge within the department, being trained and supported through specific social media tasks, including trialling new techniques that could work for new clients. By the end of Q4, the graduate will have an understanding of the service and be able to confidently liaise with clients.
